Asbestos and Mould Abatement

Asbestos and Mould Abatement

What is Asbestos and Mould

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that was a popular building material from the 1950s to 1990s. It was used extensively because it is an insulator, has good fire protection properties, has tensile strength, and is resistant to chemical erosion.

Moulds are organisms which are neither plant nor animal. They are part of the fungi kingdom and use spores to reproduce in the same way plants use seeds.  Once formed, the spores will begin to be released into the air and spread to create new mould colonies.  Mould often develops in homes and business where moisture is present and can be caused through humidity, condensation, or water intrusion from leaks, spills, and floods.  Most moulds only require suitable materials to be wet for 24-48 hours before they can colonize.

Some places where mould likes to adjoin in the home include carpet, drywall, wood, and insulation.  Noticing a musty odour in your home or business might be a good indication that mould is present and needs acknowledging.

Heath Issues

Asbestos and mould can be found in schools, hospitals, factories and homes and are hazardous to human health. Asbestos has been linked to mesothelioma, lung cancer and other lung diseases such as asbestosis and pleural thickening.  Mould on the other hand has 16 known species that are harmful to humans and is considered to cause allergic reactions with hundreds of symptoms, and in extreme cases, death.
